Austin hid in his rooms the next day, not wanting to risk the temptation of walking by Ryana’s surely-red door, waiting impatiently for Dominic’s texts, when one finally landed, with an address, at 8 pm.

He got dressed and went down the hall to knock on Zach’s door.

“Come in,” his brother said, and Austin saw him sitting on a couch with a laptop on his lap. He closed the lid as Austin walked in.

“Don’t worry, I’m not here for hot stock tips. Dominic texted me. I’m heading out.”

“You need back-up?” Zach asked.

“No, I think that’d seem strange.” And, if anything happened to Ryana in his absence and there weren’t other people in the castle who could save her, he’d never forgive himself. “It’s only a meeting, sounds purely informational. I just figured I should tell someone, just in case.”

“Look at you being all responsible, brother,” Zach said with a snort before eyeing him. “How’s camping life?”

Austin inhaled deeply. “I broke it off. Yesterday.”

Zach groaned as if he’d taken a blow on his brother’s behalf. He stood up to cross the room to Austin. “You know you did the right thing, right?”

“Yeah. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, though. And if Grim or Lyka so much as peep while I’m gone—”

Zach set a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll keep an ear out. Promise.”

“’K. See you in a couple of hours—I’ll text on my way back.”

“Sounds good. Be safe—and if things go south, let us know.”

“Will do,” Austin said, shaking his brother’s hand off before leaving.
